SHAWNEE, Okla. —
Partner Family members, volunteers and friends of Habitat
for Humanity of Shawnee, Inc., gathered to dedicate the property
that will soon hold its newest home during a blessing Thursday,
September 9, 2009.
Father Don Wolf, pastor of St. Benedict’s
Catholic Church in Shawnee, led the blessing. The dedication
included a prayer for the property, the family which will own the
home and the workers who will construct the house on site. Richard
and Anita Codopony, one of the Partner Families of Habitat for
Humanity of Shawnee, Inc., will be the homeowners of the property on
Emerald Court.
Habitat for Humanity Partner Families commit
to invest in their new home through “sweat equity,” home ownership
education, on-time payments and home repair and maintenance.
Sweat equity includes construction work on, or in support of,
Habitat homes.
Also at the event, Mrs. Codopony drew the name
of the winner of a quilt donated by Carolyn Haywood and Mary Ellen
Johnson as a fundraiser for Shawnee Habitat. The winner was
Joyce Stewart, who purchased her raffle ticket when the quilt was
displayed at Richards Drug, Inc., on Main Street in
Shawnee.

President talks
about the importance of volunteerism while working alongside Habitat
AmeriCorps members
ATLANTA (Sept. 11, 2009) – U.S. President Barack Obama and first
lady Michelle Obama volunteered on a Habitat for Humanity build site
in Washington D.C., Friday as part of the inaugural 9/11 National
Day of Service and Remembrance.
After touring the Habitat build site, President and Mrs. Obama
worked alongside Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps members and Habitat
of Washington, D.C., staff to paint the living room of a Habitat
home in the Deanwood neighborhood.
“We are honored that President and Mrs. Obama spent part of the
National Day of Service and Remembrance working with Habitat for
Humanity,” said Kent Adcock, executive director of Habitat for
Humanity of Washington, D.C. “The visit highlights the dedicated
volunteers who work in partnership with communities worldwide and
enable Habitat to provide affordable housing with families in
need.”
September 11 was officially recognized as the National Day of
Service and Remembrance as part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve
America Act. The mission of the day is to honor the victims
and those who rose to service in response to the terrorist attacks
on Sept. 11, 2001, by encouraging all Americans and others
throughout the world to perform at least one good deed on Sept. 11
each year.

Shawnee Habitat Annual Fiesta Dinner Fundraiser
Habitat for Humanity of Shawnee, Inc.,
hosted its annual Fiesta Dinner and Auction Fundraiser on Tuesday,
April 21, 2009, In the First Baptist Church’s Barton Fellowship Hall
at 10th and Union.
“The Fiesta is Shawnee Habitat’s primary fundraiser, along with
grants and individual gifts from folks.” Said Tim Youmans, president
of Shawnee Habitat. “But it also has a feel of a celebration for
Shawnee residents for all that Habitat does locally and around the
world.”
Raffle tickets for a handmade quilt were on sale during the
dinner. Carolyn Haywood, who has created quilts to benefit Habitat
for about 10 years, even before she moved to Shawnee from Virginia
three years ago, made the quilt. Mary Ellen Johnson quilted the
blanket, donating her services for the project.
In the past, Youmans said the dinner has raised from $6,000 to
$11,000 in various years through both the dinner and auction. The
goal for the 2009 event is $8.000 to benefit Habitat efforts
locally, nationally and around the world.
“Shawnee Habitat has built about one house every year of its
existence over the last 12 years.” Youmans said. “They are
affordable, decent homes for families who find themselves just below
the ability to qualify for a traditional home loan. 10 percent of
every dollar given to Shawnee Habitat goes to build homes across the
world. In third world settings, that is a lot of house for a little
money.”
Guinn agreed that the benefit of the event far outweighs the
effort required to make it happen.
“I support Fiesta because I have witnessed the transformation of
families as they partner with Habitat during construction of their
homes.” Guinn said. “The pride and accomplishment of helping build
your home empowers and strengthens families.”
A big thank
you! to all of you that volunteered during the Fiesta Dinner.

SHAWNEE, Okla. —
On two Saturdays in February, staff from Gordon Cooper Technology
Center joined with other volunteers to help build a Habitat for
Humanity house in Shawnee. The Gordon Cooper Community Service
Committee, chaired by Karin Rader, explored ways the staff could
become further involved in the community while furthering a
good cause. They chose to work on a Habitat for Humanity house,
influenced in part because Rader’s husband, Mike, is the
construction supervisor for Habitat houses in Shawnee. Marty
Lewis, superintendent at Gordon Cooper, and about 10 volunteers
signed up twice to work through the morning at the Habitat house.
Both times, working conditions were brutal, with temperatures
around freezing and a strong north wind, but the volunteers put in
their promised volunteer hours each Saturday morning. As a
result, the Habitat house #11 is going up quickly, and a
deserving young family will be in their house sooner than they would
have been without the help of the volunteers.
Thank you, to
all of you that have volunteered your time.

Habitat for Humanity of Shawnee, Inc. is an affiliate of
