CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON HOUSE #11

The slab has been poured and the walls almost finished for a Habitat house on Shamrock Ct., just north of Ken Del Drive. The McCune family has worked on House #10 in order to complete the 100 hours of sweat equity that are required before we can start a house with them. They have worked well over 100 hours.

We are using the Structural Insulated Panel System (SIPS) for the walls of this house. These should increase the strength of the house in addition to decreasing heating and cooling bills by as much as 40% because the panels are a more effective insulation device than ordinary walls.

The Shawnee affiliate is the first Habitat affiliate in Oklahoma to use SIPS, and this house will be the first in Shawnee built with these panels. The first work day was January 31, a day designed to help some people learn how to put the panels up and to start the process. The manager of USA SIPS in Bartlesville arrived in the afternoon to check on progress, along with some other interested observers.

The first open work day was on February 14, 8:30 a.m.  As you can see the crew finished putting up the outside walls and cutting out the windows.
